Conferences I have Attended

Jesse Jackson[/caption] Our efforts toward “Getting the Word Out: How to Market Your Ministry” takes us into many circles of friends, co-workers, and causes that we support.  Working with Rainbow PUSH, Reverend Jesse Jackson, and the newly appointed director of the Atlanta Regional Office of PUSH, Calvin Vismale, is one of those causes that turns into a “client” relationship whenever we are called on to assist. During the coming weeks, Rainbow PUSH will be holding its “Creating Opportunity Conference” in Atlanta on October 20 through 22.  Some of the speakers and panelist for this event include Roger Bobb, the Honorable Alexis Herman, Mrs. Juanita Abernathy, and Dr. David Satcher. This will be an opportunity for those of us…

Reverend Dr. William Barber II – Pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church, Goldsboro, NC

I believe there are no coincidences in meeting people and situations in life.  These “chance” meetings that we have now and then when people come into our lives – it’s usually for a reason.  Opportunities  arranged by a higher power. [caption id="attachment_745" align="alignright" width="300"] Bunnie Jackson-Ransom and Rev. William Barber[/caption] Such was the case when I sat at Delta Air Lines’ terminal gate in the Atlanta Airport on my way to Washington, DC.  I was sitting across from, and starring at,  this man who looked familiar.  He was napping and also engrossed in his telephone conversations.   After about thirty minutes, my curiosity got the best of me and I go up to speak to him.  I apologized for interrupting his conversation and asked “Are you from North Carolina?” to which he said “yes.”  Then…

United Fellowship of Churches Convocation Presentation

United Fellowship of Churches Convocation Presentation

Seminars and Lectures
It’s time for me to hit the road again.  This time I will be speaking at the United Fellowship of Churches  2nd Convocation on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at the Assembly of Truth, located at 350 Hills Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30313, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. I am going to do the very best that I can to shrink my one hour & thirty minute (1:30) seminar into a 45-minute presentation. What I have noticed throughout these few years that I have been on this speaking circuit is that the pastors who attend and become interested in “marketing their ministries” are not the individuals who actually do the work of “marketing.”  Yes, it is vital that these pastors understand why marketing is essential in their growth.  However, they seldom…

Finding a Focus for Your Marketing

Finding a Focus for Your Marketing

Marketing Musts
It’s time to do another blog – to send out a message to non-profit organizations and/or my church  friends –  to try and impart some of the techniques that I have learned over the past 40 years about "Getting the Word Out: Marketing Your Ministry." To get in the mood, I usually read through my book and come to a chapter, or a section that I think will resonate with people who take trying to grow their churches, their ministries and their businesses seriously. One good suggestion is to buy the book and read it.  No, buy two copies of the book and give the other copy to another trusted member of your flock asking them to help you with the project.  This will give you a partner from which to…

In order to live a more meaningful and fulfilled life, many people are engaged in a purposeful life through relationships they have with other people – individuals, teams, and/or organizations.    Let’s examine building relationships in order to strengthen our interactions within the community where…

How to handle the election season in your church

Uncategorized
This is a re-blog which was posted in October 2015. We think it's time to bring this subject up again!  Get started now planning to use these ‘tips” for the November 2016 elections. Many places of worship will find politicians, who are running for office, in their churches on Sunday morning – expecting to be introduced by the pastor.  And, expecting to capture votes. I have a few tips to offer that might be a win-win for your congregation and those candidates who are knocking on your door. Don’t wait for them to “show up”, Invite those running for one particular office to visit your church on one particular Sunday and ask them to prepare a statement relative to one special issue – an issue which you suggest. Introduce them…

Literally “Getting The Word Out” for a Community Project

Uncategorized
A group of community activists and local pastors came together to provide “Water for Flint”.  This collaborative wanted to do something that the members of the community could pull off with people working together.  Mt Carmel Baptist Church, The Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority,  Hosea Helps, First Class, Inc Public Relations, The Voter Empowerment Collaborative, Ministers from Clayton County,  AIM Steel International, and many others joined in to donate their professional expertise and time toward the project.  First Class, Inc. donated our expertise in “Getting the Word Out” about this aid in the relief efforts for Flint, MI. The team set goals. Our goal was to get media coverage, so we came up with a media plan, wrote a press release and started “pitching” the story to radio and TV. …

Talking about Black Atlanta to College Students

Uncategorized
Georgia State University, Class on Black Atlanta and the Black Popular Culture Instructor, Dr. Maurice Hopson   I enjoy talking to college students, especially those who want to know something about who they are, and where they came from.  So when Dr. Hopson asked me to speak to his class about Black Atlanta, I was very pleased to do so. I love Atlanta . . . especially Black Atlanta.  I came to this city in 1962 when I was 22 years old and I was in awe of the Black people in the city. Coming from the country in North Carolina, I might have been educated at North Carolina College with an MS degree and traveled to many northern cities; but I was still a country girl at heart.…

Getting in the media – there in no short cut

Uncategorized
Having been in the practice of media relations (public relations) for forty years, I can usually guarantee a placement in media outlets – if my clients will give me their attention and provide what I need. This might sound egotistical; but with the extensive experience that I have under my belt, I can tell you that if you want media coverage, you have to pursue it; and there are no shortcuts. New clients come to me because they want to “get the word out” and then they have specific ideas about what they want done. I listen, ask them to set some goals, give them my advice which always includes the full scope of marketing techniques – not just public relations. Sometimes – this is where we part company. Why?…
